Visual Effects that Brought ‘Ghost’ to Life: An Exclusive Chat with Ghost VFX Supervisor Mohammad Abdi”

Ghost, the eagerly awaited heist thriller featuring Shivarajkumar, is creating quite a buzz among movie enthusiasts. With a star-studded cast that includes Srini, Jayaram, Anupam Kher in their Kannada debuts, Prashanth Nayak, and Archana Jois, Ghost promises to be a cinematic delight. But what truly sets this film apart is the groundbreaking use of technology-driven visual effects. In an exclusive interview, we caught up with VFX Supervisor Mohammad Abdi, who shared his insights and experiences in bringing this visually captivating project to life.

Q: How did you approach the process of de-aging Shivarajkumar’s character in the film?

Mohammad Abdi: De-aging Shivarajkumar was a challenging yet exciting process. We started by digging into vintage images of the actor from old albums and films. These images were meticulously restored and then subjected to a detailed scan of Shivarajkumar’s facial texture. The data obtained from this process served as the basis for creating a 3D model, which formed the foundation of our work. Every shot was unique, with its own set of challenges, demanding various methods to restore and reconstruct the actor’s youthful appearance.

Q: Can you share insights into the techniques used to create the effects that play a significant role in the visual storytelling for Ghost?

Mohammad Abdi: Visual effects played a crucial role in enhancing the narrative of Ghost. For instance, the character of the Mouse in the prison was a pivotal element in the screenplay and posed one of our most complex challenges. The prison itself was meticulously designed and constructed in 3D, with several scenes requiring recreation to maintain the film’s integrity. Moments like the fiery Ferris wheel and the car crash with eerie hanging corpses were essential components of the storyline, and we had to meticulously recreate them.

Q: What were some of the unique challenges you faced in ASOO VFX in bringing an essence of suspense and intrigue to the film through your visual effects work?

Mohammad Abdi: The biggest challenge our ASOO VFX team encountered in this project was the sheer volume of shots, each with its own unique complexities. The comprehensive 3D design of the intricately detailed prison setting was particularly challenging, as it played a significant role in the film’s events. Aligning all recorded scenes with the 3D prison was a demanding task that required precision and dedication.

Q: Could you discuss the collaborative efforts between the VFX team and the director Srini, or other departments, to ensure that the visual effects are seamlessly integrated with the overall storytelling and atmosphere of the movie?

Mohammad Abdi: Right from the beginning, our VFX team engaged in numerous meetings with the director, where he shared his screenplay and conceptual ideas. We, in turn, offered our suggestions, which he readily embraced, kickstarting the production process. The strong collaborative relationship between our team, the director, and the producer played a pivotal role in advancing the project, ensuring a seamless integration of visual effects with the film’s overall storytelling and atmosphere.

Ghost promises to be a visual treat for moviegoers, thanks to the innovative and meticulous work of VFX Supervisor Mohammad Abdi and his dedicated team. The film’s use of technology-driven visual effects adds an extra layer of excitement to this much-anticipated heist thriller.
