Berlin’s VFX Industry Awarded €4m in Funding Boost

Berlin’s VFX industry has recently received a €4m funding boost, on top of the existing €5m provided by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg’s Digital Film Production program. This increase in funding has led to changes in the program’s guidelines, with the maximum grant allocation for a project now increasing from €500,000 to €1m.

Since the program’s launch in 2020, the VFX work by Berlin-based post-production houses for various projects has been supported, including Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbeldore, The Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes, the fourth season of Babylon Berlin, School Of Magical Animals, and The Swarm. This additional funding is a clear signal that Berlin remains internationally competitive in the high-tech area of VFX production and continues to be attractive as a film and series hub.

The boost for the VFX industry comes on the heels of record numbers in the Berlin-Brandenburg region, with 6,200 shooting days for film and TV productions in 2022, compared to 1,107 ten years ago in 2012. Additionally, numerous international productions used locations or studio facilities in the region, including Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, Constellation, Berlin Nobody, The Bastard, Bawaal, Role Play, and The Bends.

Overall, the funding boost is an exciting development for Berlin’s VFX industry and is sure to have a positive impact on future projects in the region.
